14/10/2014 - Captain Henry Gallaugher DSO From Finner to Flanders

Donegal County Museum invites you to a talk by Declan O’ Carroll on Capt Henry Gallaugher DSO in Donegal County Museum on Thursday 16th October at 8pm.

 Captain Henry Gallaugher DSO

Declan will talk about Henry Gallaugher’s early life in Manorcunningham and his association with the Ulster Volunteer Force. Henry joined the 11 Battalion of 36th Ulster Division and trained at Finner Camp, Ballyshannon. He was deployed to Flanders and onto the Somme where his heroic actions saw him awarded a DSO. At the Battle for Messines Ridge in 1917, he lost his life leading his men in battle.

The talk will end with the tributes paid to him at home and Hilary Roulston will read one of her poems about Capt Gallaugher.

Declan O’ Carroll, Col (Rtd) Irish Defence Forces, is a former President of the County Donegal Historical Society. He has written histories of Finner Camp Ballyshannon, Rockhill House Letterkenny, Fort Dunree, the Battle of Scarrifollis 1650 and a biography of Lt Col James McMonagle as well as being a regular contributor on historical matters to the Donegal Historical Society Annual and the Letterkenny & District Christmas annual.

Hilary Roulston has been working for over two years now with Ireland's World War I Veterans project which aims to gather and provide a comprehensive database of the names of WWI veterans from the island of Ireland who had enlisted and/or volunteered in World War I.

Admission free and all are welcome.

This talk is part of Donegal County Museum’s exhibition ‘Remembering World War One’ – The Donegal Story, which runs until January 2015.
